Photonics for International Markets and Applications

This good practice handbook for SMEs aims at supporting the knowledge exchange among project partners to support cross-sectoral cooperation and internationalisation.
This handbook is setting out recommendations for the project partners to provide a framework for their collaboration towards international markets and maximise its impact for SMEs.
A series of success factors have been identified to ensure the engagement of each cluster ecosystem to build the foundations for a sustainable partnership. This handbook will be shared and disseminated in each cluster ecosystem to support cross-sectoral cooperation and internationalisation.
By publishing this good practice handbook, the PIMAP Partnership is willing to share its experience after one year of partnership building and preparation of a joint internationalisation strategy. Download here.

In the framework of the implementation of the activities planned in the PIMAP Partnership, the project partners have conducted a mapping exercise to have a clear overview of the potential synergies with other relevant funding programmes and sector initiatives at the regional, national and European level.
The following mapping exercise presents the results of an analysis conducted in each partner ecosystem to identify potential synergies to exploit within the framework of the project. The linkages that will be developed with other initiatives at the regional, national and European level identified in this report will contribute to the sustainability of the partnership through a comprehensive approach. Business Mission to Toronto, Canada, 3-7 June, 2019
The most important PIMAP activity, internationalisation possibilities for SME's! Visits to leading photonics companies and larger metals companies like Aurubis in Buffalo, USA, and Stelco in Hamilton, Canada. Business discussions started with SME's in the Triple Steelix region, we hope to see progress!
Also participation in the EU-Canada Cluster Matchmaking Event in Toronto with signing of an agreement for deeper collaboration between the nations. Signed between Navdeep Bains, Canadian Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister and Elżbieta Bieńkowska, EU Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (photo). Interesting concept developed in Canada - Superclusters

Workshop in Borlänge, Sweden, 11 April 2019
A workshop arranged to discuss possibilities with photonics applications in the steel industry. Clémence Rottée, Alpha-RLH and Larz Ignberg, Triple Steelix, opened the meeting (photo). Saed Moussavi, SSAB and Jan Kokk, Sandvik, gave good insights in what challenges there are and an outlook into future developments. Also RISE, Shapeline and SME's like Radarbolaget and Proximion presented possible photonics based solutions.
About 25 persons attended the seminar and workshop and were informed about the internationalisation opportunities available through the PIMAP Partnership network and activities.

Workshop in Skellefteå, Sweden 3-4 April 2019
The aim of the workshop was to gather actors in photonics together with actors in recycling and handling of metallic materials.

One of the invited speakers was, Larz Ignberg from Triple Steelix. "Photonics as an enabler for advanced production and manufacturing of metals".

Steel, Copper and photonics at Photonics 4 Recycling waste material and metals processing. Presentation of Triple Steelix and our PIMAP Partnership. Visits to SME's, Northvolt and Boliden, Rönnskär. Arranged by PhotonicSweden.

PIMAP at Photonics West, San Francisco, 3-7 February 2019
One of the worlds largest photonics conferences and exhibition. Contacts created with SME's, larger companies, research institutes and other cluster organisations in the US and Canada. Visits to leading companies in the Silicon Valley region. Many potential new applications for the steel industry. Preparations for business mission in Canada during late spring.

The PIMAP Partnership has been set up to support 4 clusters, their SMEs and regional ecosystem actors to ensure key enabling technologies (KETs) such as photonics including conventional but essential technologies such as laser and microwaves can be mobilised to support Smart Manufacturing and related industrial applications. This cross sectoral activity will help drive the industrial modernisation process in Europe and will provide a springboard for cluster SMEs to internationalise and support regional actions through the leverage of photonic technologies in key emerging industries.

The inter-clustering actions will help match photonics/technology solutions with market applications to ensure cluster ecosystems linkages are strengthened. The concept will create synergies between cluster and SME policy support programmes from DG GROW and KET’s from DG RTD and support regional growth via S3 strategies. With two photonic/KET clusters and two industrial applications/ integrator clusters PIMAP can provide the foundations for both European inter cluster and international cooperation actions. SMEs will play an active part in designing and testing the strategy and sharing their experiences with SMEs from other clusters.

Two third country targets have been identified (USA and Canada) and will provide the test bed for the strategy and proposed roadmap. SMEs will participate in all stages (awareness raising, learning, testing and implementation) to ensure PIMAP is market oriented. Partners expect to involve upwards of 900 SMEs in these actions. The partners are committed to devising an internationalisation strategy with a roadmap to guide the implementation process and will propose branding and a legal framework to bind the partners together. The project will deliver synergies with other initiatives such as Vanguard and has strong support from regional policy makers (ERDF, Interreg funding). These links will facilitate the scope for sustainability actions to succeed.
