The Materials Day 2009

November 4
The Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala University

A unique opportunity to make contacts and exchange knowledge

The Ångström Materials Academy (ÅMA) has been established to function as a link between the Ångström Laboratory and the industry. The Materials Day is an annually recurring event addressing varying topics. The main part of the day is devoted to workshops focusing on the companies’ need for new knowledge. Here materials scientists and company representatives meet in smaller groups to discuss specific issues, formulated by the companies, and action plans.

Last year’s Materials Day, devoted to Adhesion, proved to be a great success. During the day questions brought up by the industrial companies were discussed in more than 30 working groups, with scientists from 18 different materials-related university departments. In a survey performed a month afterwards, 65% of the industry representatives had already tested or intended to test some of the solutions proposed in the working groups. 90% said that the event had enlarged their network and more than half had contacted scientists for further work or discussions.

Now we intend to repeat last year’s success, this time with focus on materials for sustainable energy technologies. This is an area where we are convinced that the materials scientists at the Ångström Laboratory can give valuable contributions and answers to a number of questions and problems that the industry is struggling with.

We invite you to use this unique opportunity to meet across the borders and make valuable contacts that can lead to an increased exchange of knowledge between academy and industry, and possibly to actual research collaborations.
